10 trapped as building collapses on Lagos Island
CITIZENS COMPASS –The aftermath of a collapsed building on Lagos Island on Thursday, May 30, 2024, has left 10 persons trapped inside the rubbles.
Among the victims was a 17-year-old girl.
The four-storey building situated at No 15, Iga Idunganran Street, Lagos Island, was said to be undergoing renovation when it collapsed in the morning.
Residents claimed that the building had been marked for demolition by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) but the contractor ignored this and continued the project.
Initially, Nine out of the trapped victims were said to be rescued while search and rescue were ongoing for the remaining two.
The rescued persons were Seven adult males and Two females.
In his updates, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said, “The Agency responded to distress calls and upon arrival, discovered that a four-storey residential building had collapsed at the above location.
“Information gathered at the scene of the incident revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was due to ongoing renovation. The structure had been marked by LASBCA for evacuation and had subsequently collapsed.
“A total of ten people are affected with a total of Nine people; 7 adult males and 2 female. The initial 8 people have received pre hospital care from the agency paramedics and are now at Iga Iduganran primary health care centre receiving care.
The 9th victim is now receiving treatment while efforts are ongoing to retrieve the 10th – a child-.
“All efforts are being made to retrieve the remaining two victims.
“The Shark team, LRU paramedics alongside LASBCA officials, LNSC officials, LASPPPA officials, LASAMBUS crew, Lagos State fire and rescue Service and Nigeria police force were responders presently at the incident scene.
“Search and Rescue Operation Ongoing.”
In his final update at about 3.27p.m, , Osanyintolu said, “All ten people, 9 adults and 1 17 year old girl have been rescued from the rubble.
Having received pre hospital care from the agency paramedics, they are now at Iga Iduganran primary health care centre receiving care.
“The remains of the building will now be leveled to ground zero while adjacent buildings will undergo integrity and material testing
